Is it Acid-Free?

Most lumpy materials are acid-free, including what we call “hardware” such as brads, eyelets and buttons, as well as the “warm fuzzies” like ribbons, fabrics, fibers and accents like raffia and Twistel.

Many lumpy products, like eyelets and brads, weren’t originally designed for the scrapbook market so they might not be labeled as acid-free. If you’re using materials not normally found in the scrapbook section of your store, grab an acid-testing pen and see for yourself. You can also contact the companies directly and ask a customer service representative.

Making an Impression

Don’t forget to think about possible abrasion and impression of lumpy elements when you layout your page elements. Instead, plan your double-page spreads so the “lumpy” items don’t press into the photos on the opposite page when the book is closed.

Another trick is to store your albums upright—never stack them. When scrapbooks lay on a shelf or coffee table, metal embellishments like wire and brads can make indentations on the opposite page.

Be My Valentine

Alphabet beads are perfect for kids’ pages! They make marvelous journaling accents when threaded across the bottom of a photo as Shauna did here.

Shauna strung alphabet beads onto ribbon and inserted the ends into an eyelet at each lower corner of her matted photo. A heart bead on either side of Kaelin’s name makes a sweet accent and ties in with the patterned paper and Valentne’s Day theme. Shauna added a wide ribbon tied in a shoestring bow glued above Kaelin’s photo. She completed the layout with three punched yellow flowers, each centered with an eyelet.

Fabulous fibers transform this layout into a winter wonderland, complete with tone-on-tone papers and vellum snowflakes.

Arlene started with a snowflake collage background paper for this photo of her two daughters. She cut a 6 1/2"x8 3/4" white vellum rectangle and punched 15 holes along the top and bottom sides. Blue and silver fibers are threaded vertically; white fibers run horizontally. Arlene matted this piece on blue vellum, then matted her photo on blue vellum and glued it to the fiber mat.

Arlene even added fibers to her journaling block. She computer journaled on white vellum, then matted it on blue vellum. She punched two 1" snowflakes from blue vellum, glued one on each end of the vellum rectangle, then punched a hole in each snowflake and inserted fiber.

For the fiber border on the left side of the page, Arlene placed 2 eyelets below the snowflake motif on the collage paper, and two more 1" from the bottom edge of the page. Fibers peek through the top eyelet, then disappear through the bottom.

The Beach

This page is so gorgeous, we just couldn’t resist sharing it with you here! Lisa discovered a treasure trove of possibilities using beads for texture and color.

Lisa chose a collaged background paper for a quick backdrop. She journaled on a 3 1/4"x12" strip of white vellum, tore the right edge and placed the strip even with the left edge of the palm tree collage paper. Silver eyelets fasten the vellum to the paper.

Lisa cleverly outlined the palm tree silhouettes with white pen, then cut out the bottom 1 1/2" of the silhouette and slipped a 12"x1 1/2" strip of torn sandstone behind the palms.

Now, how to attach those terrifically tiny beads? Tacky tape! Lisa covered the bottom edge of the sandstone strip with tacky tape, then covered the sticky tape with gold micro and treasure beads plus a few green beads. She die-cut the letters, then attached tacky tape and covered the top halves with blue micro beads and the bottom halves with blue treasure beads. To add extra dimension, Lisa attached the letters to her page with foam tape.
