Painting the flap, back and bottom is an easy way to add color to the portfolio for a simple look–and it dries quickly. Susan used the matte side of the portfolio as the outside, with the glossy paper on the inside. When painting on the glossy side, be aware that the slicker surface accepts paint differently and the paint may crack slightly at the inner fold when the card is folded. Susan chose to paint over that fold, then outlined the fold with a black pen for detailing. (You can also paint just up to the fold, but not on the fold, to leave a white border around the edge.)

Instructions:

  1. Paint top flap, back, and bottom 1" of the front dark pink and let dry. Paint both sides of the short inside flaps, and 1" over the folded areas of the top and bottom flaps dark pink on the inside. Let dry. Paint monogram numbers red and let dry (you may need two coats of red).

  3. Cover large front flap on the outside with dotted paper, gluing it above the painted folds. Trim excess evenly with the flap. Attach a red great big brad to the front, so about 3/8" of the top flap will tuck in behind the brad. Glue monograms to the front. Add a yellow brad to a small orange flower and attach between the monograms with Zots™. Computer print or write words by hand on dark pink paper with the black pen. Trim and ink the edges, or mat on yellow and attach as shown. Tie yellow ribbon around the top flap, securing on the front.
  4. Cover the large inside flap above the dark pink paint with dotted paper and trim the edges evenly. Cover the inside of the top flap in the same manner. Cut a 6 3/8" square from birthday words and swirls paper and glue centered to the inside. Cut out birthday coupons, the decorative square, and the tag. Mat coupons on yellow, then dark pink paper in one strip, then ink edges. Fold accordion style and attach a ribbon loop to one end. Glue the other end to the inside, with coupons folded. Mat the tag and square on dark pink paper, inking the edges. Add a brad to the end of the tag and glue to the inside. Add a ribbon tab to the square and attach with foam tape.
